Brunch Birthday in Central
A coworker in my department had her birthday right after we got out for the Christmas holidays. She had it at a pop up restaurant in Central called Statement. It […]
Hello! This is me! We are from Illinois. Both of B and I attended the same high school but did not really know each other at the time. We met after he finished high school and had been together pretty much ever since. We were married over a decade. We have three fantastic children, Monkey, Dude/Bub, and Monster.
In about 2010, B and I discussed the option of teaching overseas. B is a systems administrator and can fix just about anything. We discussed the pros and cons of such a decision. In the end, we decided to go for it. I worked in the same school as my children in Illinois while I worked to secure a job overseas.
Each year, there were interviews and a couple positions, but most were not feasible because of the added cost of schooling for three children. My position began to make drastic changes, and Love was ready for a change at the end of this past school year. He applied to a government lab. We discussed other locations we would be willing to move to in terms on overseas teaching. I had actually thought this year was done with, but I sent out letters of interest anyway. I made changes to the important papers in preparation for the next recruiting season in November and December.
At the end of April 2016, I received an email from a school in Hong Kong asking for an interview. The day after Mothers' Day, I was offered a position in the international school. At the same time as my interview process, B was going through his interview process with the lab. In the end, he was passed over for whatever reason. After much discussion,we chose to accept the position. We had about two months to get our affairs in order.
It has been a difficult road since leaving my very tight knit family in the States, but my hope is this experience provides my children with unique experiences they would have not had living in a small rural town of Illinois.
So, here we are living in the New Territories of Hong Kong. My children attend schools within my company. B is employed by the same company.
Join us in our adventure as we navigate Hong Kong and create a home since we landed here in Hong Kong on 25th July 2016.

For months, we haven’t had any cases anywhere near where we live. My children and I live in the New Territories in an area called Ma On Shan. For much of our time in Hong Kong, we have lived in this general area. Though, we did spend two years in […]
The weather is starting to turn in Hong Kong. Normally, it starts to cool down in the middle of October. It seems like it stayed warmer longer here in Hong Kong. I think having to wear masks has something to do with that. Those things suck. Now, it’s getting cold. […]
The numbers keep going up. We have been online schooling since Wednesday. It’s a bit disheartening. It is so much harder to manage students with academic challenges when it is through a computer screen. I feel like I’m chasing my tail at this point. We have had a few more […]
I spoke too soon. Today, we had 115 cases, and most of them are local in some way. The caveat is that a chunk of those are as a result of dance halls that have been operating and have ended up spreading the virus pretty far. We learned today that […]
I was invited to a photo exhibition by a friend of my friend about transgenderism. We have quite a few kids in our school who are struggling with gender identity […]
We ended up not having Thanksgiving on the day of Thanksgiving. Being that we are not in the US, we didn’t have the day off. We decided to have dinner on Saturday. B had gotten the turkey in Sha Tin a couple days before. He got a turkey we could […]
There was a lot of speculation around the press conference that was supposed to happen the other day. Most were sure they were going to close the schools down. We’re still here. The information I have right now says 81 cases for yesterday. I have heard that today we have […]
I will start off by saying I appreciate that the situation in Hong Kong is no where near as dire as it is around the world right now. Totally get that. I am sure there may be some eye rolls in showing our numbers. What comes after is discussing the […]
As with most Saturdays, I went out to dinner and drinks with my friend, M. We had pizza at an italian place right in Central called Ciak. It was in […]
