HKMama

Hello! This is me! We are from Illinois. Both of B and I attended the same high school but did not really know each other at the time. We met after he finished high school and had been together pretty much ever since. We were married over a decade. We have three fantastic children, Monkey, Dude/Bub, and Monster.
About five years ago, B and I discussed the option of teaching overseas. B is a systems administrator and can fix just about anything. We discussed the pros and cons of such a decision. In the end, we decided to go for it. I worked in the same school as my children in Illinois while I worked to secure a job overseas.
Each year, there were interviews and a couple positions, but most were not feasible because of the added cost of schooling for three children. My position began to make drastic changes, and Love was ready for a change at the end of this past school year. He applied to a government lab. We discussed other locations we would be willing to move to in terms on overseas teaching. I had actually thought this year was done with, but I sent out letters of interest anyway. I made changes to the important papers in preparation for the next recruiting season in November and December.
At the end of April 2016, I received an email from a school in Hong Kong asking for an interview. The day after Mothers' Day, I was offered a position in the international school. At the same time as my interview process, B was going through his interview process with the lab. In the end, he was passed over for whatever reason. After much discussion,we chose to accept the position. We had about two months to get our affairs in order.
It has been a difficult road since leaving my very tight knit family in the States, but my hope is this experience provides my children with unique experiences they would have not had living in a small rural town of Illinois.
So, here we are living in the New Territories of Hong Kong. My children attend schools within my company. B is employed by the same company.
Join us in our adventure as we navigate Hong Kong and create a home since we landed here in Hong Kong on 25th July 2016.

My birthday

It was my first birthday away from family and friends.  It was sort of weird.  I went the whole day at work with no one knowing it was my birthday.  I honestly was okay with that.  I don’t like a huge fuss.

They need to make up their minds

What they do is have the students write a goal (or two).  They come up with ways to meet their goals as well as ways for those around them to help them meet those goals.  Then in the conference, it is 3 way because it is a meeting between the parent(s), student, and teacher.  The student is mostly in control of the meeting.  During the meeting, the parent(s) and teacher help the student to determine another goal or two to work on.  The student also tells the parents how things have been going and show their work to the group.

Less than a week until Pupper!!

Pupper will leave the US on my birthday.  She will arrive the following day.  I am really nervous about sending her alone on the plane, but she has to be shipped as cargo anyway.  On the way back to the US, she will ride in the plane with us, but not on the way here.

3 months down, 21 to go….

I think we are getting more in the swing of things.  Love and I were able to finally get all of the boxes out of the flat last night.  I feel less like a box storage facility.  He is putting together our dining room table and entertainment center today.  We can put some stuff away once all of that is together.  We need to make the flat more like home.  I think we need to paint the walls and put up some art.  I have some art in the boxes that can be put up.  I can’t wait to get that stuff on the walls.

Monkey’s Birthday

Today, Monkey turned 15.  I can’t believe it.  I made her a special breakfast for her birthday. I can’t believe she’s grown up so much.  I remember being young and terrified of being pregnant.  I remember Love knowing before I did that we were going to be parents.  I remember […]
