It was my first birthday away from family and friends. It was sort of weird. I went the whole day at work with no one knowing it was my birthday. I honestly was okay with that. I don’t like a huge fuss (who does at this age?).
It wasn’t until the very end of the day when I was working with a student and asked him to head home (he was more than happy to continue gaming instead of going home). I wanted to go home for my birthday dinner. I was slightly giddy about it because we were going to the Japanese place near our compound for dinner. Eating out was rare for us due to money (or rather lack of). I was going to get my ginger pork and gyoza, and wasn’t no one going to stop me.
Love and the kids and I went to Ma On Shan for dinner. I chose a Japanese style roll cake for my cake. We picked up a couple of things for Pupper since she was going to arrive the following day to Hong Kong. Monster was excited because we got a bag for Pupper to carry her around in.
It was a really nice birthday with Love and the kids, but I would be lying if I said I didn’t miss my family and friends.
I have not made any serious friends in Hong Kong at this point. We did have another American family move into the same compound as us. They are even in the same block, but it just wasn’t meant to be. I’m hoping things calm down here, and we are able to adjust a little more for more time. It’s only been a few months. We are still so new here…
It’s going to get better, right?
